Retrieval practice reverses the order: first try to bring the idea back from memory, then check and correct it. The attempt is useful even when it is incomplete because it reveals the exact gap that rereading can hide.
A 25-minute retrieval block
Choose one concept or skill—not an entire chapter. Write the question you want to answer.
Write the explanation, formula, diagram or method from memory. Mark uncertainty instead of guessing invisibly.
Compare with a reliable source. Identify the missing step or misconception, not only whether the final answer was wrong.
Attempt one new question that requires the same idea in a slightly different form.
Write one short prompt and return to it after a delay. The later attempt tells you more than another immediate reread.
Spacing matters because memory changes
An immediate second attempt can be supported by short-term familiarity. A delayed attempt asks whether the knowledge remains accessible after some forgetting has occurred. Reviews should therefore be separated over time and adjusted: weak or difficult material returns sooner; stable knowledge can wait longer.
There is no universal perfect interval for every student and subject. The useful principle is repeated successful retrieval with increasing delay—not mechanically reviewing everything every day.
Where AI can help—and where it can hurt
AI can generate a prompt, offer a hint, compare reasoning and vary a practice question. It becomes less useful when it reveals the complete solution before you attempt the problem. The best sequence is usually attempt → targeted help → correction → new attempt.
